ein, eine: “a” and “an”
der, die, das point to something known: the table. For something new or not specific – a table – German uses ein or eine, and the gender still matters: ein for der- and das-nouns, eine for die-nouns. der Tisch → ein Tisch, das Buch → ein Buch, die Tasche → eine Tasche. A thing is usually introduced with ein/eine and then continues with der/die/das: Das ist ein Buch. Das Buch ist neu.
| Gender | Definite (the) | Indefinite (a, an) |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | der Stuhl | ein Stuhl |
| feminine | die Lampe | eine Lampe |
| neuter | das Heft | ein Heft |
Hier ist ein Kuli, und da ist eine Zeitung. Here is a pen, and there is a newspaper.
The plural: always die
In the plural the three genders meet: every noun takes die. der Tisch → die Tische, das Buch → die Bücher, die Frau → die Frauen. There is no plural of ein: ein Buch → Bücher, so Das ist ein Buch becomes Das sind Bücher. The verb goes into the plural too: Das Kind spielt → Die Kinder spielen. The hard part is the noun itself. German has several plural endings, and the table shows the main patterns; the vowels a, o, u often take an umlaut on the way (Buch → Bücher, Apfel → Äpfel).
| Pattern | Singular form | Plural form |
|---|---|---|
| -e | der Tag | die Tage |
| -e + umlaut | der Stuhl | die Stühle |
| -er + umlaut | das Buch | die Bücher |
| -er | das Kind | die Kinder |
| -n | die Lampe | die Lampen |
| -en | die Frau | die Frauen |
| -s | das Auto | die Autos |
| no ending | der Lehrer | die Lehrer |
| umlaut only | der Apfel | die Äpfel |
A few tendencies make guessing easier. Feminine nouns mostly add -n or -en; the ending -in doubles its n: die Lehrerin → die Lehrerinnen. Masculine and neuter nouns ending in -er, -el, -en and -chen usually add nothing: der Lehrer → die Lehrer, das Mädchen → die Mädchen – only the article shows the plural, and sometimes an umlaut (der Apfel → die Äpfel). Words from English and French and words ending in a vowel other than -e take -s: die Autos, die Handys, die Kulis.
Die Kinder spielen, und die Lehrer trinken Kaffee. The children are playing, and the teachers are drinking coffee.
