Linguakein: “no” or “not a” before a noun
German has two words for “not”. kein negates a noun that would otherwise have ein or no article: Das ist ein Buch → Das ist kein Buch. Ich habe Zeit → Ich habe keine Zeit. kein works exactly like ein: kein for der- and das-nouns, keine for die-nouns – and, unlike ein, kein also has a plural: keine Kinder, keine Äpfel. In English you would say “not a” or “no”: That is not a book, I have no time.

nicht: for everything else
Everything that is not a noun with ein or without an article is negated with nicht: verbs (Wir tanzen nicht), adjectives (Der Tisch ist nicht neu), words like gern (Ich koche nicht gern) – and nouns with der, die, das: Das ist nicht die Zeitung von heute. A simple test: if you could put ein in front of the noun, or it has no article at all, use kein; in all other cases use nicht. Where nicht stands you already know from the last unit.

Hunger, Durst, Lust, Zeit: you “have” them
Where English says “I am hungry”, German says “I have hunger”: Ich habe Hunger, Ich habe Durst (I am thirsty), Ich habe Zeit (I have time), Ich habe Lust (I feel like it). These nouns have no article, so they are negated with kein. One detail: after haben, kein before a der-noun becomes keinen – Ich habe keinen Hunger, Er hat keinen Durst. Take it as a fixed phrase for now; the reason (the accusative case) comes later in the course. Die- and das-nouns do not change: keine Zeit, keine Lust, kein Geld. And the friendliest negative of all is Kein Problem!
