Days, months and dates

am Montag: the days of the week

All the days are masculine (der Montag) and all but one end in -tag (day). The odd one out is Mittwoch, literally “mid-week”. “On Monday” is am Montag – am before every day. In the north and east of Germany you may hear Sonnabend for Saturday. Ask Welcher Tag ist heute? and answer Heute ist Freitag. – with no article.

The seasons are der Frühling, der Sommer, der Herbst and der Winter. Months and seasons take im: im Mai, im Winter. So there are three little words for time: um for the clock, am for days and dates, im for months and seasons.
