LinguaWie spät ist es? – two ways to tell the time
You ask Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? and answer with Es ist …. The official time is used on the radio, in timetables and at work: 24 hours, then the word Uhr, then the minutes – 14:30 is vierzehn Uhr dreißig, 7:05 is sieben Uhr fünf. Uhr here means “o’clock” and never takes a plural: zwei Uhr, zehn Uhr. One o’clock is ein Uhr, or simply eins.

halb acht: half an hour before eight
Among friends Germans use a 12-hour clock with nach (past), vor (to) and Viertel (quarter): Viertel nach drei (3:15), zehn vor vier (3:50). The trap is halb: it looks forward to the NEXT hour. halb acht is 7:30 – half way to eight. For British speakers this is the opposite of half eight, which means 8:30. In parts of southern Germany and Austria you may also hear Viertel acht (7:15) and drei viertel acht (7:45).

um … Uhr: at what time?
Es ist … says what time it is now. For an appointment use um: Um wie viel Uhr? – Um neun (Uhr). Wann works too. Do not mix up die Uhr (the clock, o’clock) and die Stunde (an hour of time): ein Uhr is one o’clock, eine Stunde is sixty minutes. der Mittag is noon and lunchtime, die Mitternacht midnight. früh means early, spät late: Es ist spät – it is late.
Der Film beginnt um Viertel nach acht.The film starts at a quarter past eight.
