Hello and goodbye

One hello for the whole day

Korean does not divide the day into good morning, good afternoon and good evening. 안녕하세요 covers every hour and every stranger, colleague and shopkeeper. Literally it asks are you at peace, so the intonation can rise slightly as a question, and it is said with a small bow of the head. Among close friends and to children the short 안녕 does the same job; to anyone older or unfamiliar, always the long form.

Two goodbyes, depending on who moves

Goodbye splits in two. To the person who is leaving you say 안녕히 가세요 – go in peace. To the person who is staying you say 안녕히 계세요 – stay in peace. So a guest leaving a house says 계세요 to the host and hears 가세요 back; two people parting on the street both say 가세요. Between friends 잘 가요 (go well) and 또 만나요 (let us meet again) are lighter. At night the same split appears: 안녕히 주무세요 to an elder going to bed, 잘 자요 to a friend. On the phone, and only there, the opening word is 여보세요.
