After three lessons you can count to a hundred, ask Quanto custa? and understand the answer in reais and centavos, give a phone number with meia for six, ask Que horas são? and A que horas…?, and talk about days, months and dates: no sábado, aos domingos, no dia 7 de setembro. The same few little words – e, para, às, no, de – carry all of it.

Um or uma, dois or duas
Look at the noun before you count. o real is masculine: um real, dois reais, vinte e um reais. a hora is feminine: uma hora, duas horas, às vinte e uma horas. That is why the time says à uma and às duas, while money says um real and dois reais. Half an hour is meia for the same reason, and noon is meio-dia because o dia is masculine.
– Quanto é tudo? – São quarenta e um reais.– How much is it all together? – It’s forty-one reais.
Às, no, aos: the little words of time
