Segunda, terça, quarta: the days of the week
Portuguese numbers the working days. Counting from Sunday, Monday is the second day – segunda-feira – Tuesday the third – terça-feira – and so on to sexta-feira, Friday. Only the weekend has names: sábado and domingo. In speech -feira usually falls away: na segunda, até sexta. Days are written with a small letter. The -feira days are feminine (a segunda), o sábado and o domingo are masculine.

| quarta-feira | quarta | Wednesday |

No sábado, aos sábados: one day or every week
One particular day takes em + the article: no sábado (em + o), na segunda (em + a) – “this Saturday”, “on Monday”. A habit, something that happens every week, takes a + the plural article: aos sábados (a + os), às segundas (a + as). Todo sábado means the same as aos sábados. A range is de … a …: de segunda a sexta. And to name the day itself: Hoje é terça. Amanhã é quarta.
Aos domingos a gente almoça na casa da avó.On Sundays we have lunch at Grandma’s.
Janeiro, fevereiro, março: months and dates
Months are also written with a small letter. A date is dia + number + de + month: dia 7 de setembro, dia 25 de dezembro. The first day of a month is normally primeiro, not one: primeiro de janeiro, no dia primeiro. Years are read as whole numbers: 1998 is mil novecentos e noventa e oito, 2026 is dois mil e vinte e seis – you will practise big numbers in the bonus. To ask the date, say Que dia é hoje? – Hoje é dia 12. For “on” a date use no dia: no dia 3 de março; for a whole month, em: em março.
