LinguaThe word between the number and the noun
In Vietnamese a number almost never stands right in front of the noun. Between them you need a small word called a classifier – in Vietnamese, loại từ. The classifier says which family the thing belongs to: an object, a living creature, or something you ride. English does something similar in two sheets of paper: you cannot say two papers either.

cái is the general classifier for objects that do not live: cái bàn, cái ghế. con goes with living creatures: con mèo, con chó. These two cover most of what you will name in your first weeks.

chiếc: vehicles and half of a pair
chiếc goes with things you ride – chiếc xe máy, chiếc xe đạp – and with one item out of a pair: chiếc giày is one shoe, chiếc đũa is one chopstick. Many objects accept both cái and chiếc; cái sounds more everyday, chiếc a little more careful.
