LinguaThe owner comes second
English puts the owner first: my house. Vietnamese does the opposite – the thing owned leads and the owner follows it. The word that links them is của: nhà của tôi, literally house of me. Nothing agrees with anything: của is the same for one owner or many.
Nhà của tôi ở Hà Nội.My house is in Hanoi.
When của disappears
With family members, with your own name and with the place you live, Vietnamese simply drops của and puts the two words side by side: mẹ tôi, tên tôi, nhà tôi. Keeping của is not a mistake – it only sounds heavier, as if you were stressing whose. With kinship words, dropping it is what people actually say.

Any owner at all
The owner does not have to be tôi. It can be a name, another person word such as anh ấy or chị ấy, or a whole phrase: nhà của bố mẹ tôi. When the owner is more than one word, keep của – it holds the long phrase together. người means person, and it behaves the same way.
