Dates and months: ngày, tháng, năm

Months are numbered too: tháng một … tháng mười hai

The weekdays taught you the trick, and the months use it again: tháng is the month, and the name of a month is simply tháng plus its number. January is tháng một, June is tháng sáu, December is tháng mười hai. There is no list of names to memorise – if you can count to twelve, you can already say every month of the year. Only one of them changes shape, and it is the familiar one: April is tháng tư, with the same tư you saw in thứ tư.

Writing and asking a date: ngày, tháng, năm

A Vietnamese date names the day first, then the month, then the year, and each part carries its own word: ngày for the day, tháng for the month, năm for the year. Ngày 2 tháng 9 năm 1945 is the second of September 1945. In writing the same date shrinks to 2/9/1945, so a form that says 2/9 means the second of September and never the ninth of February – worth checking twice on a ticket. When the month is already clear from the conversation, the day stands alone: ngày 20.

Hôm nay là ngày 12 tháng 8.Today is the twelfth of August.

The question reuses what you already have. Hôm nay là ngày bao nhiêu? asks for today's date – bao nhiêu because a day can run up to 31 and you have no idea which one is coming. Tháng mấy? asks for the month, with mấy because there are only twelve. Northern speakers add one habit for the first ten days of a month: they say mùng in front of the number, so the third is ngày mùng ba. After the tenth the mùng disappears again.

Birthdays: sinh nhật and ngày sinh

sinh means 'to be born', and it builds the two words you need. sinh nhật is the birthday you celebrate – the cake, the song, the invitation. ngày sinh is the date of birth as a fact on a form or an identity card. Both are said with the date pattern you have just learned, and both often carry của in front of the person: Sinh nhật của chị Hoa là ngày 3 tháng 5.

The four seasons: mùa xuân, mùa hè, mùa thu, mùa đông

mùa is the season, and the four names are always said with it in front. The months below are the northern ones, where all four really are felt. The south does not work that way: from Ho Chi Minh City southwards people speak of two seasons only, mùa khô and mùa mưa, the dry one and the rainy one, and the calendar of seasons follows the water rather than the temperature.
