Pointing at things near you
هٰذَا (hādhā, this) points at a masculine noun, هٰذِهِ (hādhihi) at a feminine one. With an indefinite noun after it you have a sentence: هٰذَا كِتَابٌ – “this is a book”, هٰذِهِ سَاعَةٌ – “this is a watch”. To ask: مَا هٰذَا؟ or مَا هٰذِهِ؟ – “what is this?”.
| Masculine: هٰذَا | Feminine: هٰذِهِ |
|---|---|
| هٰذَا كِتَابٌ. | هٰذِهِ سَاعَةٌ. |
| هٰذَا دَفْتَرٌ. | هٰذِهِ طَاوِلَةٌ. |
| هٰذَا قَلَمٌ. | هٰذِهِ حَقِيبَةٌ. |
| هٰذَا كُرْسِيٌّ. | هٰذِهِ صُورَةٌ. |
| هٰذَا بَابٌ. | هٰذِهِ نَافِذَةٌ. |
The small upright stroke in هٰذَا is a long ā written small (alif khanjariyya). Without vowel signs the word is written هذا, and that is what you type.
مَا هٰذِهِ؟ هٰذِهِ حَقِيبَةٌ.What is this? – This is a bag.
هٰذَا مُدَرِّسٌ، وَهٰذِهِ طَالِبَةٌ.This is a teacher, and this is a student.
