Near and far
| Gender | Near: this | Far: that |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | هٰذَا | ذٰلِكَ |
| feminine | هٰذِهِ | تِلْكَ |
ذٰلِكَ (dhālika) and تِلْكَ (tilka) point at what is far away. They work like هٰذَا: with an indefinite noun, a sentence – ذٰلِكَ رَجُلٌ, “that is a man”; with the article, a phrase – ذٰلِكَ الرَّجُلُ, “that man”. Note امْرَأَة (imraʾa, woman): with the article it is الْمَرْأَة (al-marʾa).
Which? Whose?
أَيّ (ʾayy, which) stands before an indefinite noun: أَيُّ سَيَّارَةٍ؟ – “which car?”. لِمَنْ (li-man, whose; for whom) asks about an owner: لِمَنْ هٰذَا الْكِتَابُ؟ – and the answer uses لِـ too: لِمُوسَى (“Musa’s”). And with هَلْ: هَلْ هٰذِهِ السَّيَّارَةُ جَدِيدَةٌ؟ – “is this car new?”.
تِلْكَ الْمَرْأَةُ طَبِيبَةٌ.That woman is a doctor.
لِمَنْ تِلْكَ السَّيَّارَةُ؟ لِسَمِيرٍ.Whose is that car? – Samir’s.
