Where are you from? Countries and nationalities

Where are you from?

مِنْ (min) is “from” and أَيْنَ (ʾayna) is “where”. To a man: مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ؟ (min ʾayna ʾanta?), to a woman: مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتِ؟ (ʾanti) – again only the last vowel. The answer: أَنَا مِنْ مِصْرَ (ʾanā min Miṣr), “I am from Egypt”. Before the article مِنْ becomes مِنَ: مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ (mina l-Maghrib), “from Morocco”.

Nationality: the ending -iyy

Add ـِيّ (-iyy) to a country and you get its people: مِصْر → مِصْرِيّ (miṣriyy), “Egyptian”, said of a man. For a woman add ـَة: مِصْرِيَّة (miṣriyya). The article and a final -ā or -iyā drop first: الْمَغْرِب → مَغْرِبِيّ, سُورِيَا → سُورِيّ, فَرَنْسَا → فَرَنْسِيّ.
