Quel, quelle: which one? And the weather

Quel, quelle, quels, quelles: the question word that agrees

Quel means “which” or “what” in front of a noun, and like an adjective it agrees with that noun: quel (masculine singular), quelle (feminine singular), quels (masculine plural), quelles (feminine plural). Four spellings, one sound – “kel” – so only the noun tells you how to write it: quel jour ? but quelle heure ?, quels livres ? but quelles langues ? You already use two of them: Quel âge as-tu ? and Quelle heure est-il ? The word moves like the others: Tu as quel âge ? at the end in speech, Quel âge est-ce que tu as ? with the opener, Quel âge as-tu ? with inversion. Before être, quel asks for an identity or a detail: Quel est ton prénom ?, Quelle est ta ville préférée ? And with an exclamation mark the same word admires: Quelle bonne idée !

Quel temps fait-il ? Talking about the weather

Le temps is the weather (and also “time”, as in combien de temps). The weather question is a fixed inversion everybody uses: Quel temps fait-il ? – or, in speech, Il fait quel temps ? The answers use an impersonal il, like il est trois heures. With il fait and an adjective: il fait beau (fine), il fait mauvais (bad), il fait chaud, il fait froid, il fait bon (pleasant), il fait vingt degrés. Two verbs stand alone: il pleut (it is raining) and il neige (it is snowing). And with il y a you name what is in the sky: il y a du soleil, il y a du vent, il y a des nuages. Do not confuse the weather with the person: il fait froid is the air, j’ai froid is you.

Les quatre saisons: au printemps, en été, en automne, en hiver

La saison is feminine; the four seasons are all masculine: le printemps (spring), l’été (summer), l’automne (autumn), l’hiver (winter). To say “in” a season, three of them take en with no article – en été, en automne, en hiver – and only spring takes au: au printemps. Two spellings hide silent letters: the -ps of printemps (“prin-tan”) and the -mn- of automne (“o-tonn”). Ask about seasons with quelle, since saison is feminine – Tu préfères quelle saison ? – and answer with the weather: L’hiver, parce qu’il neige.
