Three lessons in, you can hold the first minutes of a conversation in German: greet by the time of day, give your name with ich heiße, ich bin or mein Name ist, say where you come from and where you live with kommen aus and wohnen in, name your languages with sprechen, ask Wie geht’s? and say goodbye. Every one of these lines exists twice – once for du, once for Sie – and the table puts the two versions side by side.

The verb in second place – or first
All the sentences of this unit follow one rule of German word order. In a statement and in a question with a question word, the verb is the second element: Ich komme aus Spanien. – Woher kommst du? In a yes–no question, the verb comes first: Kommst du aus Spanien? The ending of the verb always agrees with the person: ich komme, du kommst, Sie kommen.
Kommen Sie aus Österreich? – Nein, aus der Schweiz.Are you from Austria? – No, from Switzerland.
