LinguaDie Wohnung: the rooms of a flat
die Wohnung is a flat or apartment, das Haus a whole house. Many room names are compounds with Zimmer: das Wohnzimmer (wohnen + Zimmer, the living room) and das Schlafzimmer (schlafen + Zimmer, the bedroom). A compound takes the gender of its LAST part, so every …zimmer is das. You also know die Küche and das Bad; der Flur is the hall. Watch the counting: when a German flat advert says drei Zimmer, it means three rooms to live in – the kitchen, the bathroom and the hall are not counted.

Wie ist die Wohnung? Describing with sein
After sein an adjective has no ending at all: Die Küche ist klein. Das Bad ist neu. The words for a flat come in pairs: hell (bright) – dunkel (dark), groß – klein, ruhig (quiet) – laut (noisy), teuer – billig, alt – neu. The favourite word of German flat-hunters is gemütlich – cosy, warm, a place where you like to sit. The second time you mention a thing, use a pronoun that matches its article: der → er, die → sie, das → es. Der Balkon ist klein, aber er ist hell. English says “it” for all three; German does not.

To ask how many, say wie viele + plural: Wie viele Zimmer hat die Wohnung? (wie viel with no -e is for amounts you do not count: Wie viel kostet das?) The answer uses haben with the object forms you know from the food unit: einen and keinen for der-words. Die Wohnung hat einen Balkon, aber keinen Garten. With die- and das-words nothing changes: eine Küche, ein Bad.
