LinguaWo ist …? A place takes the dative
To answer wo? (where?), German puts a preposition before the noun, and the article after it changes to the dative – the same forms you met after mit and zu: der → dem, das → dem, die → der, and in the plural die → den, with an extra -n on the noun. Der Tisch becomes auf dem Tisch, die Wand becomes an der Wand. Two short forms are almost always used: im = in dem (im Schrank) and am = an dem (am Fenster). The indefinite article follows the same pattern: einem for der and das, einer for die.

Nine prepositions of place
in is inside something, auf is on top of a surface, an is on a vertical surface or right at the edge (a wall, a window, a door). unter is under, über is above without touching – the lamp über dem Tisch. vor is in front of, hinter behind, neben next to, and zwischen stands between two things, each with its own dative: zwischen dem Bett und der Tür. All nine take the dative when the question is wo? (the other question, wohin? – where to? – comes in a later unit).
