LinguaGerman says HOW a thing is somewhere
English says “the book is on the table”. German prefers a verb that shows the position. stehen is for upright things that rest on a base or legs: a wardrobe, a bottle, a cup, a lamp on a desk. liegen is for flat things: a phone, a key, glasses, a carpet. hängen is for things fixed from above or on a wall: a picture, a mirror, a ceiling lamp, clothes in the wardrobe. sitzen is for people and animals on a chair or sofa. The place after these verbs is the wo? + dative of the last lesson: Die Lampe hängt über dem Tisch.

Same thing, different verb
The verb follows the position, not the object. A book steht in the shelf (upright) but liegt on the table (flat). A bottle in the door of the fridge steht; a bottle on its side liegt. Cups, glasses and plates rest on their base, so they stehen on the table. People do all four: Ich stehe am Fenster. Er sitzt auf dem Sofa. Sie liegt im Bett. All four verbs are regular in the present tense; only sitzen needs care with du: du sitzt (the s of the stem swallows the s of -st).
