C'è, ci sono: rooms and furniture

C'è, ci sono: saying what there is

To say that something is in a place, Italian uses c’è with one thing and ci sono with two or more: c’è un tavolo, ci sono quattro sedie. C’è is ci + è with an apostrophe; ci sono is always two words. For “there is no …” put non in front: non c’è, non ci sono. A question is the same sentence with a question mark: C’è un balcone?

C'è or è? Dov'è il bagno?

C’è and ci sono bring in something new, usually with un, una or a number: in camera c’è un armadio. When you and the other person already know the thing – usually with il, la, i, le – you just say where it is with è and sono: Dov’è il bagno? – Il bagno è a destra. Dove sono le sedie? – Sono in cucina. With rooms Italians often drop the article: in cucina, in bagno, in camera, in soggiorno.

– Scusa, dov'è il bagno? – È in fondo al corridoio, a sinistra.– Sorry, where is the bathroom? – It’s at the end of the corridor, on the left.
