Checkpoint: Essere and Avere

Two key verbs side by side

Essere says who or what someone is: origin (sono di Roma), nationality, role (è studente) and how someone is, with an adjective (siamo stanchi). Avere says what someone has: things and people (ho una penna, ha un fratello), age (ho vent'anni) and body states with a noun (abbiamo fame). Both are irregular, and the pronoun is usually dropped – the verb form already says who.

Sono stanco, ho sonno: which verb?

with esserewith avere
Sono stanca.Ho sonno.
Sono di Napoli.Ho trent'anni.
È studente.Ha due sorelle.
Siamo contenti.Abbiamo caldo.

– Siete stanchi? – No, ma abbiamo fame!– Are you tired? – No, but we’re hungry!

Endings that follow the person

An adjective after essere changes with the person: -o, -a, -i, -e (stanco, stanca, stanchi, stanche), or -e / -i for adjectives like gentile and giovane. The noun after avere never changes: Marco and Anna both say ho fame. Molto and un po' before an adjective stay the same; molto before a noun agrees with it: molta fame.
