Ho fame: what your body “has”
Many states of the body and the mind are said in Italian with avere + a noun, without an article: “I have hunger” instead of “I am hungry”. So ho fame (I’m hungry), hai sete? (are you thirsty?), abbiamo sonno (we’re sleepy). The same pattern gives avere ragione (to be right) and avere torto (to be wrong). To make it stronger, put molto before the noun, agreeing with it: ho molta fame, ho molto freddo.

Marco è alto, Anna è alta: describing people
To describe someone, use essere + adjective, and the adjective agrees with the person, as in the last lesson: Marco è alto, Anna è alta. Adjectives in -e have one form for a man and a woman – Luca è gentile, Sara è gentile – and -i for the plural of both: gentili, giovani. In simpatico the c is hard, but the plural for men is simpatici, with a soft c; for women it is simpatiche. Before an adjective, molto (very) and un po' (a bit) never change: Anna è molto alta, siamo un po' stanchi.
| a man | a woman | men, or a mixed group | women |

| alto | alta | alti | alte |
| basso | bassa | bassi | basse |
