O, a, um, uma: gender and the articles

Every noun is masculine or feminine

In Portuguese every noun has a gender – not only people, but things and ideas too. There is no neuter. The small word in front shows the gender: o livro (the book) is masculine, a mesa (the table) is feminine. o and a mean “the”; um and uma mean “a, an”. In the plural they become os, as, uns, umas – uns and umas mean “some”.

Endings that give the gender away

Most nouns in -o are masculine (o carro, o livro) and most nouns in -a are feminine (a casa, a mesa). Two endings are always feminine: -dade (a cidade, a universidade) and -ção (a lição, a informação). Other endings (-e, -l, -r) tell you nothing: learn those nouns with their article.
