LinguaClothes for the Brazilian heat
Everyday clothes: a camiseta (T-shirt), a bermuda (shorts), o chinelo (flip-flops), o tênis (trainers), a calça (trousers) and o vestido (dress). Two surprises: a calça is singular – uma calça jeans is one pair of jeans – and um tênis is one pair of trainers. You buy clothes in a loja (the shop).

Colours agree

Colours go after the noun and agree with it: a camiseta branca, os tênis brancos. Colours in -e or a consonant have one form for both genders: verde, azul; the plural of azul is azuis. Rosa and laranja are named after things (a rose, an orange) and in careful writing do not change: camisetas rosa.
In the shop
Provar is to try on: Posso provar? The fitting room is o provador. O tamanho (size) goes in letters – P, M, G, GG (small, medium, large, extra large) – and shoes in numbers: Calço 38. To ask the price: Quanto custa? or Quanto é?
– Posso provar esse vestido? – Pode, o provador é ali.– Can I try this dress on? – Sure, the fitting room is over there.
