To talk about plans, Brazilians use ir + infinitive: Vou viajar. A gente vai jogar bola. Only ir changes; the second verb stays in the infinitive. The one-word future (viajarei) belongs to formal writing. With a time word the present also works: Amanhã eu trabalho.
No sábado, a gente vai fazer um churrasco lá em casa.On Saturday we’re going to have a barbecue at our place.
When?
Time words for plans: hoje à noite (tonight), amanhã, no sábado, no fim de semana. For “next” Brazilians love que vem: semana que vem, mês que vem, ano que vem (with or without na/no in front). O próximo works too: no próximo fim de semana.
Mês que vem os meus pais vão conhecer o Nordeste.Next month my parents are going to visit the Northeast for the first time.
Inviting and making plans
Vamos + infinitive is “let’s”: Vamos jogar bola? Vamos ao cinema? To invite someone: convidar alguém para algo – Vou convidar a Ana para o show. To agree on the details: combinar – Vamos combinar o horário? Short answers: Vamos! / Hoje não posso.
