Lavar is washing with water – the dishes, the clothes, the car. Limpar is cleaning in general – the kitchen, the bathroom, the table. Arrumar is putting things in order: arrumar o quarto, and arrumar a cama is making the bed. And fazer appears in many chores: fazer compras, fazer a comida (cooking), fazer faxina (a big clean).
No sábado eu lavo a roupa e arrumo a casa.On Saturday I do the laundry and tidy the house.
No fim de semana: the weekend
The weekend is o fim de semana – no fim de semana for this one, nos fins de semana for every weekend. Brazilians love to sair com os amigos, ir à praia, passear in the park or the mall, ver série and simply descansar. Remember the irregular eu forms: saio, vejo, faço.
Dar and pôr live in many fixed expressions. Dar uma volta is going for a short walk or ride; dar banho no cachorro is washing the dog; pôr a mesa is setting the table; pôr a roupa na máquina is loading the washing machine. In speech, colocar often replaces pôr: colocar a mesa.
Depois do almoço, a gente dá uma volta na praia.After lunch we go for a walk on the beach.
Eu ponho a mesa e meu marido lava a louça.I set the table and my husband washes the dishes.
