ser says what someone or something is: identity, job, origin, nationality. A profession after ser takes no article: Ela é médica. Sou professor. (With an adjective the article comes back: É uma médica excelente.) Origin is ser de: Somos de Recife. Nationality is an adjective: Ele é brasileiro.
A Carla é médica, e o marido dela é professor de música.Carla is a doctor, and her husband is a music teacher.
Character and lasting features
With an adjective, ser describes what someone or something is like by nature – what you would put in a description: O prédio é alto. O Paulo é simpático, mas a irmã dele é séria. A Ana é baixa. The adjective agrees as usual: Os prédios são altos.
Time, date and material
ser also tells the time and the date. One o’clock is singular, every other hour plural: É uma hora, São três horas. Hoje é sexta-feira. Hoje é dia 12. And ser de + material says what a thing is made of: A mesa é de madeira. Os copos são de vidro.
São duas horas, e hoje é dia 3 de maio.It’s two o’clock, and today is the 3rd of May.
