estar is the second “to be”. It describes a state that can change – how someone feels or is doing at the moment: Estou cansado. Ela está feliz hoje. O café está frio. Health, mood and nerves go here: doente, triste, nervoso, ocupado. Note the stress: está (is) has an accent, esta (this) does not.
Hoje a Mariana está doente e muito cansada.Today Mariana is ill and very tired.
Estar com fome: hunger, thirst, cold
Portuguese says you “are with” hunger: estou com fome, estou com sede, estou com frio, estou com calor. The noun never changes, whoever speaks: Eles estão com fome. For the weather, use está + the word, with no person at all: Está calor. Está frio. (Many Brazilians also say Faz frio.)
Where people and things are
estar + em also says where a person or a thing you can move is right now: Onde você está? – Estou no trabalho. As chaves estão na bolsa. Remember the contractions: no, na, nos, nas.
Os meninos estão no parque, e está muito calor.The boys are in the park, and it’s very hot.

| o calor | heat, hot weather | Em janeiro, o calor no Rio é forte. In January the heat in Rio is intense. |
| frio | cold | Em julho, está frio em Curitiba. In July it’s cold in Curitiba. |
