Russian does not have things – things are at you
Russian owns a verb for to have, иметь, and hardly ever uses it about ordinary belongings. Possession is built the other way round: У меня есть книга is literally at me there is a book. The owner follows у in a changed form, and the thing owned keeps its plain dictionary form, because in this sentence the thing is the subject.
| Pronoun | The whole frame | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| я | у меня есть | I have |
| ты | у тебя есть | you have, speaking to one friend |
| он | у него есть | he has |
| она | у неё есть | she has |
| мы | у нас есть | we have |
| вы | у вас есть | you have, polite or several people |
| они | у них есть | they have |
The н that appears from nowhere
On their own он, она and они are его, её, их – but after a preposition they grow an н: у него, у неё, у них. Every preposition does this, not only у, and getting it wrong is the small slip that marks a foreigner at once.
| Pronoun | On its own | After у | Who it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| он | его | у него | one man or a masculine thing |
| она | её | у неё | one woman or a feminine thing |
| они | их | у них | several people or things |
У меня есть друг, а у него есть машина.I have a friend, and he has a car.
And when there is none: нет
The negative is never не есть. Russian says нет, and the thing that is missing changes its ending: У меня есть книга becomes У меня нет книги. That ending is the genitive, the case of absence – the very case you met in из Москвы. Notice that the sentence is left with no subject at all, and that is precisely why the noun has to change.
