At the market: how much, how many

Food in four groups: fruta, verdura, carne, pescado

A market is organised by stall, and each stall sells one group of food. Learn the group word first – it is what you say when you do not know the exact name: ¿Tiene fruta? Then the items of that group. Most food words are everyday nouns with their article, and the plural follows the rules you know: la manzana → las manzanas, el tomate → los tomates.

GroupMeaningAt the stall

Things you can count go plural (tomates, huevos); things you weigh stay singular (queso, arroz). Medio has no un in front: medio kilo, not un medio kilo.

Asking the price: ¿cuánto cuesta? and ¿a cuánto están?

For one thing with a fixed price: ¿Cuánto cuesta el queso? – plural cuestan for plural things: ¿Cuánto cuestan los plátanos? Fruit and vegetables change price every day, so the market has its own question: ¿A cuánto están los tomates? – and the answer keeps the a: Están a dos euros el kilo. At the end, as in the café, ¿Cuánto es todo?

At the stall: ¿qué le pongo?, ¿me da…?, ¿algo más?

Who speaksPhraseMeaning

you¿Me da un kilo de peras?could you give me a kilo of pears?
seller¿Algo más?anything else?
youNada más, gracias.nothing else, thanks
you¿Cuánto es todo?how much is it all?

¿Me da…? is the market cousin of ¿me pone…?: literally "do you give me", a polite request that works in Spain and all over Latin America. The seller talks to you as usted (¿qué le pongo?), and you answer with the quantity: Un kilo de manzanas, por favor.

¿A cuánto están las naranjas? – A un euro con veinte el kilo. How much are the oranges? – One euro twenty a kilo.

¿Me da medio kilo de tomates y una docena de huevos? – ¿Algo más? – No, nada más, gracias.Could you give me half a kilo of tomatoes and a dozen eggs? – Anything else? – No, nothing else, thanks.
