LinguaEl menú del día: three courses and a drink
At lunchtime most Spanish restaurants offer el menú del día: a fixed price for a primer plato, a segundo plato, a postre and a bebida, bread included. You choose one dish from each list. The waiter asks ¿Qué quiere de primero? and you answer with de: De primero, la ensalada; de segundo, el pollo; de postre, fruta. Careful: primero loses its -o before a masculine noun (primer plato) but keeps it when it stands alone (de primero).

Para él, para ella: ordering for the whole table
One person can order for everyone with para: para mí la sopa, para él la paella, para ella el pescado, para nosotros una botella de agua. Two more tools before you choose: ¿Qué lleva? asks what is in a dish (Lleva huevo, patata y cebolla), and sin removes what you do not want: sin cebolla, sin carne. If you never eat meat, say soy vegetariano or soy vegetariana – it agrees like any adjective.

Ser or estar with food
Ser says what a dish is, always: la paella es un plato de arroz, el gazpacho es una sopa fría, el curry es picante. Estar says how this plate, now tastes: está muy rico, está salado, está frío, está buenísimo. The compliment to the cook is always with estar: ¡Está muy rico! In Spain es rico about a person means wealthy, so keep the taste with estar.
