The second "to be": where and how
Spanish has two verbs where English has one to be. You already know ser: it says what someone or something is – Ana es médica, es de México. Estar takes the other half of the job: it says where someone is and how they are right now. You have met it twice already: in ¿cómo estás? and in el banco está en la plaza.
| Pronoun | Form of estar | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | estoy | Estoy en casa. |
| tú | estás | ¿Estás bien? |
| él, ella, usted | está | Ana está en Madrid. |
| nosotros, nosotras | estamos | Estamos en clase. |
| vosotros, vosotras | estáis | ¿Estáis cansados? |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | están | Los niños están en el parque. |
Four of the six forms carry a written accent: estás, está, estáis, están. They end in a vowel, -s or -n, so by the rule from the first unit the stress would fall on es-; the tilde moves it to the last syllable, where it really is. Only estoy and estamos follow the default and need no mark.
Job one: where someone or something is
For location the pattern is estar + en + place: estoy en casa, mi padre está en el trabajo, estamos en Madrid. The question is ¿dónde está…? – and, as you saw with hay, it is the question for a thing both speakers already know: ¿Dónde está el hospital? – Está cerca.
Job two: how you are right now
Estar + adjective describes a state that can change: today, this week, at the moment. Estoy cansado, mi hermana está enferma, estamos contentos, los niños están aburridos. The adjective agrees with the person, exactly as after ser: cansado, cansada, cansados, cansadas. ¿Cómo estás? – Estoy bien, gracias. / Estoy un poco nervioso.
| You want to say | Verb | Example |
|---|---|---|
| who someone is: profession, origin | ser | Ana es médica. Es de México. |
| what someone is like by nature | ser | Ana es alta y simpática. |
| where someone or something is | estar | Ana está en el hospital. |
| how someone feels right now | estar | Ana está cansada. |
Hoy estoy muy ocupada, pero no estoy nerviosa.Today I am very busy, but I am not nervous.
¿Dónde está Marta? – Está en el trabajo, y está un poco triste.Where is Marta? – She is at work, and she is a little sad.
