LinguaThe pointing word comes last
English puts the pointing word first: this table, that cat. Vietnamese does the opposite – the pointing word closes the group, after the noun. The full order is: number, classifier, noun, and only then này, kia or đó.

này, kia, đó – three distances

Cái bàn này rất đẹp.This table is very beautiful.
kia points at something further away that both of you can see. đó points at what is next to the listener, or at a thing that has just been named. You can also drop the noun and keep the classifier: cái này is this one, cái kia is that one, con kia is that animal. To say who owns the thing, add là của tôi after the group: Cái kia là của tôi. – that one is mine.
ở đây, ở kia, ở đó – saying where
The same three words build the place words: ở đây (here), ở kia (over there), ở đó (there). They come at the end of the sentence, after the thing they speak about: Con mèo ở đây. – the cat is here.
