Consonants: s like sh, lh, nh, ch and the two r sounds

The consonants that sound like Portugal

The European s depends on where it stands. At the end of a syllable, before a pause or a voiceless consonant, it sounds like English “sh”: três (three), os, festa (party). Before a voiced consonant it becomes the “zh” of “measure”: mesmo (same), os dias. Between two vowels a single s is a z: casa, mesa. Written ss and ç are always a sharp s: massa (pasta), praça.

l, then h, written together and read as one sound: the l with the middle of the tongue pressed up, like Italian “gli” – filho, trabalho.

n, then h: one sound, like Spanish ñ or the ny of “canyon” – vinho, amanhã.

c, then h: always the sound “sh” – chá (tea), chuva (rain). Never the “ch” of English “church”.

Two r’s side by side, only between vowels: the strong r. In Lisbon it is made at the back of the throat, like French r – carro. With one r in the same place you get a quick tap of the tongue – caro.

Two s’s side by side, only between vowels: a sharp s, never a z – massa. With one s you would hear z: mesa.
