Nasal vowels: ã, õ, ão and the m at the end

Sounds that go through the nose

A vowel with a til, or a vowel followed by m or n at the end of a syllable, is nasal: the air comes out through the nose as well as the mouth. The m and n themselves are not said as separate sounds – bom (good), sim (yes), um (one), tempo (time), onde (where) end in, or carry, a nasal vowel. With the til, two vowels often join into one nasal glide: pão (bread), mãe (mother), põe (puts).

ã with its wave, then o: one nasal glide, like “ow” said through the nose – pão, não. The most common ending in Portuguese.

ã with its wave, then e: a nasal “eye” – mãe, cães. In Lisbon the final -em of bem and também has exactly this sound.

õ with its wave, then e: a nasal “oy” – põe, lições. You will meet it mostly in plurals.
