Où est… ? Prepositions of place

Où est le marché ? Où sont les enfants ? Asking where

You met (where) in tu es d’où ? To ask where something is, put it before être: où est le marché ? for one thing, où sont les enfants ? for several. Only the verb changes, exactly as in il est / ils sont. In the street, add the polite opener you know: Pardon, madame, où est la gare ?Excusez-moi, monsieur, où sont les toilettes ? In relaxed speech the question word goes last: la gare, c’est où ?elle est où ? The answer starts with the pronoun or c’estelle est là, c’est ici – and then comes a preposition of place, the subject of this lesson. Watch the accent: with the accent means where; ou without it means or.

Pardon, monsieur, où est la gare ? – Elle est là, devant vous.Excuse me, sir, where is the station? – It is there, in front of you.

Six prepositions take the place directly, with its normal article and nothing else: devant (in front of), derrière (behind), dans (in), sur (on), sous (under), entre (between). Note that dans and sur do not always match English: you are dans la rue (in the street), never “sur la rue”, but sur la place (on the square) and sur le pont (on the bridge). Devant and derrière can also stand alone at the end: le taxi est devant – it is in front.

The taxi is in front of the hotel and the bike is behind.

À côté de, en face de, près de, loin de: prepositions that end in de

The other prepositions of place end in de: à côté de (next to), en face de (opposite), près de (near), loin de (far from), à gauche de (to the left of), à droite de (to the right of). That final de meets the article exactly as à did in the last lesson: de + le becomes duà côté du cinéma; de + les becomes desà droite des toilettes; de la and de l’ stay as they are – en face de la banque, près de l’école. “De le” never exists. À gauche and à droite also work alone, without de: la gare est à gauche (on the left), le marché est à droite (on the right).

ArticleAfter deExample

The bank is next to the cinema, opposite the station.

Dans la rue, sur la place, sur le pont: where in the city

Four places every town has: la rue (the street), la place (the square – nothing to do with a “place” to sit), le pont (the bridge) and l’église (the church, feminine: une église). Each comes with its own preposition: you walk dans la rue, the market is sur la place, you stand sur le pont and the boats pass sous le pont. A church is a landmark, so it often anchors a direction: derrière l’église, à gauche de l’église.

The church is on the square, to the left of the bridge.
