Position 2: the verb’s fixed seat

In a German statement the conjugated verb is always the second element. The first place can hold the subject – or something else: a time, a place, a word like dann. When something else comes first, the subject does not disappear, it simply moves to the spot right after the verb: Ich lerne heute Deutsch. → Heute lerne ich Deutsch. English speakers often say Heute ich lerne, but that puts the verb third, and German never allows it in a statement. An “element” can be several words: in Am Abend kochen wir, am Abend fills position 1 on its own.

zuerst, dann, danach: order – immer, manchmal, nie: frequency

To tell a day in order you need zuerst (first), dann (then), danach (after that) and später (later). They love position 1, and each one pushes the subject behind the verb: Zuerst lerne ich. Dann koche ich. Danach tanzen wir. The small linking words und (and) and aber (but) do not count as a position – they stand in front of it: …, und dann spielen wir. To say how often, use immer (always), oft (often), manchmal (sometimes) and nie (never). They usually stand after the verb, Ich koche nie, and manchmal likes position 1 too: Manchmal kochen wir zusammen (together).

nicht: where the “not” goes

nicht (not) never stands at position 2 – that seat belongs to the verb. When it negates the whole statement, nicht goes to the end: Ich arbeite heute nicht. Paul kommt morgen nicht. When it negates only one part, it stands right before that part: before a word like gern or gut (Ich schwimme nicht gern, Das ist nicht gut) and before a place (Er wohnt nicht in Berlin). nie already means “not ever”, so it never needs a second nicht: Ich tanze nie.
