Scusi, dov'è …? Asking the way
To stop a stranger in the street, start with Scusi – the polite “excuse me”. Then ask Dov’è …? (where is …?): Scusi, dov’è la stazione? If you only need one of a kind, ask C’è un … qui vicino? or C’è una … qui vicino? (is there a … near here?). Qui means “here”. At the end: Grazie!
– Scusi, c'è una farmacia qui vicino? – Sì, in piazza Dante.– Excuse me, is there a chemist’s near here? – Yes, in Piazza Dante.

Vada dritto, giri a destra: the answer
A stranger answers you with the polite form, as you asked: vada dritto (go straight on), giri a destra (turn right), giri a sinistra (turn left), attraversi la strada (cross the street). Giri comes from girare, “to turn”. Between friends, with tu, the same instructions sound different: va’ dritto, gira a destra. Sempre dritto means “keep going straight on”.
| Polite form (Lei) | With tu | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| vada dritto | va' dritto | go straight on |
| giri a destra | gira a destra | turn right |
| giri a sinistra | gira a sinistra | turn left |
| attraversi la strada | attraversa la strada | cross the street |
| prenda la prima a destra | prendi la prima a destra | take the first (street) on the right |
Vicino, lontano, all'angolo: where it is
È vicino – it is near; è lontano – it is far. With a place: vicino a piazza Dante, lontano da qui (far from here). Davanti a is “in front of”, dietro is “behind”: dietro la chiesa. All’angolo means “on the corner”. With a feminine place you also hear the adjective form: la stazione è lontana.
La farmacia è all'angolo, dietro la chiesa. The chemist’s is on the corner, behind the church.
