A + il = al: preposition and article in one word
Five short prepositions – a (to, at), in (in, to), di (of), da (from, at someone’s) and su (on) – join the definite article that follows them into one word: a + il = al, in + la = nella, di + il = del, da + il = dal, su + il = sul. Before a vowel the article keeps its apostrophe (all’angolo), and before lo, la, le the l is doubled (allo, alla, alle).
