Il mio, la mia, i miei: possessives

Il mio cane, la mia macchina: my, your, his, her

An Italian possessive normally stands with the article: il mio cane (my dog), la mia macchina (my car), i miei gatti (my cats). It agrees with the thing you own, not with the owner. Suo and sua therefore mean both “his” and “her”: Luca and la sua macchina – his car; Anna and il suo cane – her dog.

Anna e il suo cane abitano a Roma.Anna and her dog live in Rome.

Mia madre, but i miei fratelli

With ONE family member the article disappears: mia madre, mio padre, suo fratello, tua sorella, nostro zio. It comes back in three cases: in the plural (i miei fratelli, le mie sorelle), with loro (la loro figlia), and with a changed form of the word, such as sorellina (little sister): la mia sorellina. In everyday speech i miei alone means “my parents”.

Mia sorella e i miei fratelli abitano a Milano. My sister and my brothers live in Milan.

To name the owner, Italian uses di: la macchina di Marco, il cane di Anna. The question is Di chi è? – “Whose is it?”. The answer: È di Anna, or with a possessive and no article: È mio, è mia.

– Di chi è questo cane? – È di Marco.– Whose dog is this? – It’s Marco’s.
