Mi piace: the thing you like is the subject
Italian says “football pleases me”: mi piace il calcio. The thing you like is the subject, so the verb follows it: one thing or a verb – piace (mi piace leggere); two or more things – piacciono (mi piacciono i gatti). The person who likes it comes first: mi (to me), ti (to you), or a + a name: a Marco piace. Non goes in front: non mi piace. A question is just the tone: Ti piace?
| Who likes | One thing / a verb | Two or more things | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| a me | mi piace | mi piacciono | I like |
| a te | ti piace | ti piacciono | you like |
| a Marco | a Marco piace | a Marco piacciono | Marco likes |
Mi piace il cinema, ma non mi piacciono i film tristi.I like the cinema, but I don’t like sad films.
To react, use a me: if you feel the same about something positive – Anche a me! (me too); about something negative – Neanche a me! (me neither). If you feel differently: A me no. / A me sì.
| Your friend says | Same for you | Not for you |
|---|---|---|
| Mi piace il calcio. | Anche a me. | A me no. |
| Non mi piace ballare. | Neanche a me. | A me sì. |
Il tempo libero: what you do in your free time
Two verbs for “play”: giocare a + a game or sport (gioco a calcio, giochi a tennis?) and suonare + an instrument (suono la chitarra). Fare sport is the general “to do sport”. With piace the activity stays in the infinitive: mi piace ballare, ti piace viaggiare?
