Vuoi venire?: volere, potere, dovere and invitations

Voglio, posso, devo + infinitive

Three verbs carry another verb in the infinitive: volere (to want), potere (can, may) and dovere (must, have to). Voglio andare al mare, posso venire, devo lavorare. All three are irregular – learn the table by heart. Non goes before them: non posso uscire.

Vuoi venire? Ti va di …? Inviting

To invite a friend: Vuoi venire al cinema sabato? or, more relaxed, Ti va di + infinitive: Ti va di mangiare una pizza? (also Ti va un gelato?). Say yes with Volentieri! or Perché no?; say no kindly with Mi dispiace, non posso and a reason with devo: devo lavorare. Then fix l’appuntamento (the meeting): Ci vediamo alle otto davanti al cinema – “See you at eight in front of the cinema.”
