Adjectives: agreement and position

Four forms, and after the noun

A Portuguese adjective copies the gender and the number of its noun, so a typical adjective has four forms: o carro novo, a casa nova, os carros novos, as casas novas. The adjective usually comes after the noun: uma cidade pequena, not uma pequena cidade – that order exists, but it sounds literary or emotional.

Eles moram num apartamento pequeno e bonito. They live in a small, pretty flat.

One form for both genders: -e, -l

Adjectives in -e and -l do not change for gender: um homem inteligente, uma mulher inteligente; um exercício fácil, uma lição fácil. In the plural they follow the noun rules: -e adds -s (inteligentes, grandes), and -l becomes -is (fácil → fáceis, difícil → difíceis). The written accent of fácil and difícil stays in the plural.

Nationalities: brasileiro, japonês

Nationality words are adjectives and are written with a small letter. Those in -o have the usual four forms (brasileiro, brasileira). Those in -ês add -a for the feminine and -es for the plural, and lose the accent everywhere except the first form: japonês, japonesa, japoneses, japonesas – the same with inglês, francês, português. The masculine singular also names the language: Ela é japonesa e fala japonês.

A Yuki é japonesa, e o marido dela é brasileiro.Yuki is Japanese, and her husband is Brazilian.
