All three groups end in -o with eu. After that, -ar verbs keep the a (fala, falam), while -er and -ir verbs take e (come, abre; comem, abrem). Only nós tells -er from -ir: comemos, abrimos. a gente always takes the ele/ela form: a gente fala, a gente come, a gente abre.
A gente trabalha de dia e estuda à noite.We work during the day and study in the evening.
Não, questions and short answers
não, nunca, também and só stand before the verb. A yes–no question keeps the word order and just rises at the end; the short answer repeats the verb: – Vocês moram aqui? – Moramos. Question words come first: o que, quem, onde, quando, por que, como. The answer to por que starts with porque.
– Vocês entendem inglês? – Entendemos, mas não falamos.“Do you understand English?” “We do, but we don’t speak it.”
