LinguaHundreds and thousands
Big numbers are built the same way as the tens: a digit plus the size word. trăm is a hundred, nghìn is a thousand, triệu is a million and tỷ is a billion. So hai trăm is 200, ba nghìn is 3000, một triệu is 1 000 000. Notice one thing straight away: năm stays năm in front of trăm and nghìn. The lăm you learned happens only after mười and mươi.

nghìn in the north, ngàn in the south
A thousand has two names. In Hanoi and in writing you meet nghìn; in Ho Chi Minh City people say ngàn. They are the same number and nobody will misunderstand either one. Prices are the place you will hear them most often, because everyday sums in Vietnam run in thousands.
The gap in the middle: linh and lẻ
When a number has hundreds and units but nothing in the tens slot, Vietnamese fills the empty slot out loud with linh in the north or lẻ in the south: 101 is một trăm linh một, 105 is một trăm linh năm, 209 is hai trăm lẻ chín. Two details matter. After linh or lẻ nothing changes shape – 105 ends in năm, not lăm, and 101 ends in một, not mốt, because there is no mười or mươi in front. And when it is the units slot that is empty, you add nothing at all: 110 is một trăm mười, 120 is một trăm hai mươi.

Saying your age
Age is a number and the word tuổi, with no verb between them at all: Tôi hai mươi lăm tuổi. To ask, put the question word where the number would go – mấy for a child, bao nhiêu for a grown-up – and add ạ when the other person is older than you: Anh bao nhiêu tuổi ạ?
Tôi hai mươi lăm tuổi.I am twenty-five years old.
Cô Mai bốn mươi tuổi.Mai is forty years old.
