Greetings through the day
Portugal greets by the time of day: bom dia until lunch, boa tarde in the afternoon, boa noite once it is dark. Boa noite also says goodbye at night. Olá works at any hour and is a little more casual. To leave: adeus (goodbye), até logo (see you later), até amanhã (see you tomorrow) and the very casual tchau.
| Expression | When |
|---|---|
| Bom dia | good morning – until lunch |
| Boa tarde | good afternoon – until dark |
| Boa noite | good evening, good night – after dark, also to leave |
| Olá | hello, hi – any time |

| Até logo | see you later (today) |
| Até amanhã | see you tomorrow |
Saying your name: Chamo-me …
The verb is chamar-se (to be called). In Portugal the little word me (myself) goes AFTER the verb, joined with a hyphen: Chamo-me Ana (I am called Ana, my name is Ana). Just as common: O meu nome é Ana (my name is Ana). You may add eu (I): Eu chamo-me Ana. To ask a friend or someone young, use tu (you): Como te chamas? After the question word como, the little word moves in front: te chamas. To ask politely, an older person or a customer: Como se chama?
