Where are you from? Ser de …
Origin is ser de + place: Sou de Lisboa (I am from Lisbon). Many places have an article, and de joins it: de + o = do, de + a = da. So o Porto gives Sou do Porto, o Brasil gives do Brasil, a Rússia gives da Rússia. Lisboa and Portugal have no article: de Lisboa, de Portugal. To ask: De onde és? (to a friend).
| Person | ser (to be) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| eu | sou | Sou de Lisboa. |
| tu | és | És do Porto? |
| ele, ela, você | é | Ela é da Rússia. |
| nós | somos | Somos do Brasil. |
| vocês, eles, elas | são | Eles são do Japão. |
Where you live and what you speak
morar em + place is “to live in”: Moro em Lisboa. em joins the article too: em + o = no, em + a = na – Moro no Porto. Languages follow falar with no article: Falo português e inglês. Look at the endings: tu always ends in -s (moras, falas, és). vocês is the plural “you” – for friends and strangers alike – and takes the same form as eles: vocês moram.
| Person | morar (to live) | falar (to speak) |
|---|---|---|
| eu | moro | falo |
| tu | moras | falas |
| ele, ela, você | mora | fala |
| nós | moramos | falamos |
| vocês, eles, elas | moram | falam |

– Falas inglês? – Falo, e também falo francês.– Do you speak English? – I do, and I also speak French.
