Reflexive verbs: the pronoun after the verb
In Portugal the little pronoun comes after the verb, with a hyphen: levanto-me (I get up), visto-me (I get dressed), deito-me (I go to bed), despacho-me (I hurry). Brazil puts it in front – that sounds foreign in Lisbon.
| Person | levantar-se (get up) |
|---|---|
| eu | levanto-me |
| tu | levantas-te |
| ele, ela, o senhor | levanta-se |
| nós | levantamo-nos |
| eles, elas, vocês | levantam-se |
A day in order
Acordo às sete, levanto-me, tomo banho e lavo os dentes. Visto-me e tomo o pequeno-almoço. Then almoço à uma and chego a casa às seis – Portugal says chegar a casa, not “em casa”. Janto às oito e deito-me às onze.
Normalmente acordo cedo, mas ao domingo levanto-me tarde.I usually wake up early, but on Sundays I get up late.
