Sono le tre, è l’una: the hours
To ask the time, say Che ore sono? (the most common) or Che ora è? The answer is plural, because it means “they are the … hours”: sono le + number – Sono le due, Sono le tre, Sono le undici. Only one o’clock is singular: è l’una. Noon and midnight have no article: è mezzogiorno, è mezzanotte.
| Clock | You say |
|---|---|
| 1:00 | È l'una. |
| 2:00 | Sono le due. |
| 8:00 | Sono le otto. |
| 12:00 | È mezzogiorno. |
| 0:00 | È mezzanotte. |
– Scusi, che ore sono? – Sono le undici.– Excuse me, what time is it? – It’s eleven o’clock.
E un quarto, e mezza, meno dieci: the minutes
Minutes after the hour come with e (and): le tre e cinque, le tre e dieci. A quarter is un quarto, half is mezza: le tre e un quarto (3:15), le tre e mezza (3:30) – e mezzo is also correct. After the half hour, Italians often count back from the next hour with meno (minus): le quattro meno venti (3:40), le quattro meno un quarto (3:45). Le tre e quaranta is correct too.
| Clock | You say |
|---|---|
| 3:05 | le tre e cinque |
| 3:15 | le tre e un quarto |
| 3:30 | le tre e mezza |
| 3:40 | le quattro meno venti |
| 3:45 | le quattro meno un quarto |
A che ora? – times of events and the 24-hour clock
To ask when something happens, say A che ora …? The answer uses alle (a + le): alle otto, alle nove e mezza – but all’una, a mezzogiorno, a mezzanotte. To make clear which part of the day, add di mattina, di pomeriggio, di sera or di notte: alle otto di sera. Timetables, shops and offices use the 24-hour clock, read with the same words: 18:30 is le diciotto e trenta, and Il treno parte alle ventuno e quindici (21:15).
– A che ora apre la banca? – Alle otto e mezza di mattina.– What time does the bank open? – At half past eight in the morning.
