Ho visto un film: first steps in the passato prossimo

Ho mangiato: avere + past participle

To say what you did, Italian uses the passato prossimo: the present of avere (ho, hai, ha …) + a past participle. Regular participles are easy: -are → -ato (mangiare → mangiato), -ere → -uto (vendere → venduto), -ire → -ito (dormire → dormito). It is the everyday past: “I ate”, “I have eaten” and “I did eat” are all ho mangiato.

Fatto, visto, letto, preso – and sono andato

Some very common verbs have their own participle – learn them as whole chunks: ho fatto (fare), ho visto (vedere), ho letto (leggere), ho preso (prendere). Andare is different: it takes essere, and the ending tells who went – sono andato for a man, sono andata for a woman. For now keep it as a fixed chunk; the full rule comes at A2.
