LinguaOrdering at the padaria
There are three everyday ways to ask for something. Eu quero … (I want) is direct and normal at a counter. Eu queria … (literally “I wanted”) is the polite “I’d like”. Me vê … (“give me”) is relaxed and very Brazilian – you hear it at every padaria. Add por favor and all three sound friendly: Me vê um pão de queijo, por favor.

Gostar de and its contractions
gostar (to like) always brings de, and de merges with the article: de + o = do, de + a = da, de + os = dos, de + as = das. Gosto do pão de queijo. Ela gosta da coxinha. Eles gostam dos doces. With a verb or when you mean a thing in general, there is no article: Gosto de café. Gosto de cozinhar.

| por favor | please | Mais um cafezinho, por favor. One more coffee, please. |
| a padaria | bakery (with a counter for coffee and snacks) | A padaria da esquina abre às seis. The bakery on the corner opens at six. |
| o lanche | snack, light meal | À tarde, as crianças comem um lanche. In the afternoon the children have a snack. |
